Instructor: Paul Rolfe. This is an on-going class that you can sign up for a month of sessions or up to three months in advance to save money. You are encouraged to take an introductory class before starting this program. In the class, you will be taught the traditional approach of woodcarving using gouges, chisels and a mallet. The first thing you will learn is how to sharpen your tools and then how to use them properly. Eventually, you will be able to work on any project of your choice, receiving instructive input along the way. Please call Paul at the store for more information.

This class offers an introduction to setting up and using hand planes. This is a full day class beginning with a brief history of hand planes, and a discussion on the different types of hand planes and their uses; followed by a walkthrough of disassembly, re-assembly, and tuning of a plane, and blade sharpening before lunch. After the break the class will focus on practical use of planes by taking rough stock and making it true and square. Participants will receive hands on experience with a block plane, smoothing plane, and jointing plane. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own planes, but not required; all other supplies are included.

You will learn all about the machines, the tools and the techniques first so that you can fully enjoy finding your own way without the frustrations that many beginning wood turners experience. Projects will include a mallet and a pen.

Learn to achieve wood tones and custom colors. This class will address preparing wood with proper sanding techniques, applying wash coats, layering of stains and glazes to develop a deep rich finish. Students will work with sample boards supplied to prepare and develop color samples. Those boards will function as recipes for future projects.

Demonstrations will be performed to show how to color out sapwood and how to buff out a finish to either a satin or a high gloss final finish. Students will perform the buff out process and grain filling techniques. Tuition includes supplies but students are encouraged to bring their own sample boards to work on. Students should bring two felt blocks, one rubber block, and nitrile staining gloves.
