Woodturning Summer Series with Meryl Valnes

This is a special series of classes taught by an accomplished wood turner and instructor. The classes are designed to take you through all of the basics of woodturning followed by more advanced, specialized techniques. Each of the three sessions are different but linked together through common threads. You may sign up any one or two of the sessions or get the full benefit and save some money by signing up for all three sessions.

Each student is required to bring safety glasses or a face shield. If you have tools you can bring them, but they are not required. Suggested tools include a spindle roughing gouge, 3/8 spindle gouge, 3/8 bowl gouge, parting tool, scraper, and skew (min of 1/2"). All materials are included.

Instructor: Paul Rolfe. This is an on-going class that you can sign up for a month of sessions or up to three months in advance to save money. You are encouraged to take an introductory class before starting this program. In the class, you will be taught the traditional approach of woodcarving using gouges, chisels and a mallet. The first thing you will learn is how to sharpen your tools and then how to use them properly. Eventually, you will be able to work on any project of your choice, receiving instructive input along the way. Please call Paul at the store for more information.

Session One: Intro to Woodturning and Pen Turning (June 20) & Session Three: Intro to Special Techniques (August 8)
  1. Quick review of safety and questions from last session.
  2. Go over the home work from last session and do class review.
  3. Intro Tools required to turn bowls and different ways to sharpen them. (This includes traditional and fingernail gouges, scrappers, skews, and parting tools).
  4. Different methods of mounting a bowl (Chucks, Face plates, screw chucks, and glue blocks).
  5. A discussion of turning natural edge bowls will be included.
  6. Turn small bowl and go over sanding methods.
  7. Go over the different types of finish that can be used on bowls.
  8. Homework: turn a bowl and finish it.

The 2015 NC Woodcarving Festival was held on Saturday, March 21st at Klingspor's Woodworking Shop in Raleigh, NC. The festival is held once a year in Raleigh. It's a celebration of woodcarving that's open to all friends of the art.
