Instructor: Paul Rolfe. This is an on-going class that you can sign up for a month of sessions or up to three months in advance to save money. You are encouraged to take an introductory class before starting this program. In the class, you will be taught the traditional approach of woodcarving using gouges, chisels and a mallet. The first thing you will learn is how to sharpen your tools and then how to use them properly. Eventually, you will be able to work on any project of your choice, receiving instructive input along the way. Please call Paul at the store for more information.

Instructor: Paul Rolfe. This class takes over where the INTRO TO WOODCARVING class leaves off. We will begin with a session on how to sharpen all types of carving tools. Students will then carve a project that focuses and builds on the special skill of "reading the wood" while working with gouges. Learning how to anticipate problems before they happen will make woodcarving a much more enjoyable process.

Instructor: Paul Rolfe. Relief carving is the act of "relieving" a design from a usually flat background. The third dimension in space is either greatly reduced as in the case of shallow or bas relief, or it is fully carved as in the case of deep relief carving. In this class you will learn the traditional approach to relief carving including the topics of design, layout and execution using gouges and a mallet. Once you learn these basic skills, you will be able to produce your own classic designs in wood on panels and furniture.
