Product Description

The KM-1 Kerfmaker simplifies the process of making very accurately sized dados, grooves, and/or half lap joints.

There are often times when your dados, half laps and other joints joints may not only be visible but they will also be an integral element adding to the final design aesthetics. In this case, the joints must not only be perfect but you need to be able to do them efficiently. This is especially true if you are earning your living creating fine workpieces. The KM-1 Kerfmaker can help you to achieve both of those goals. The KM-1 is basically a highly accurate flip stop which you can simply calibrate to the kerf of the blade (or dado set or router bit!) and the width of the piece being fitted into the groove. You easily set the KM-1 for a slip fit or a friction fit by how tightly you set the work piece calibration. (A simple test is to flip over the workpiece with the KM-1 clamped on and if it stays in place it will be a tight fit. If it slips off, it will be a slip fit.) The KM-1 will work on table saws, router tables, chop saws, radial saws, and the Jointmaker Pro. You only need to use the KM-1 once to understand its logic and be able to apply it in many different situations. Watch the short video linked above to see how the KM-1 is set up and used. This small tool is milled from solid aircraft grade aluminum and anodized for durability and an attractive appearance. It will provide years of service in your shop.

FAQ

Can I use a Kerfmaker as a Tenonmaker as well? I'd like to use one tool for both dado cuts and tenons?
No. The Kerfmaker and the Tenonmaker have opposite functions. The Kerfmaker subtracts one kerf width to create a cut that exactly matches the thickness of the stock, as gaged by the Kerfmaker, to be inserted into the dado or groove created by using the Kerfmaker as a flip stop. The Tenonmaker adds one kerf width to an existing mortise or groove, as gaged by the Tenonmaker, to create a tenon that fits the exact width of the mortise or slot created by using the Tenonmaker as a flip stop.

I am making a cabinet that requires a number of dados for shelves. How do I make these dados with the KM-1?

The KM-1 allows you to make a perfect dado cut for your shelf system. If all of your shelf stock is the same thickness, then you only need to gage one board and use the KM-1 as a flip stop for all of them. The length of the stock is not relevant to the function of the KM-1. If your stock is so long, you cannot use the KM-1 as a flip stop on the end, then you will need to attach scab boards to your stock that requires the dado cuts you need to create. You can screw an auxiliary fence to your table saw sled and that will give you the clamping area needed to use the KM-1 on the end of the board for dados on long stock.

Why can I not get the correct width of the cut?
Prior to starting, close the Kerfmaker jaws and make sure they close all the way. Next, the orange jaw needs to be calibrated to the exact kerf. Prior to calibration the tool needs to be closed and locked. The two cuts create a small block and when placed back into the corner of the parent stock, the offsets are the EXACT thickness of your saws kerf. Make sure the orange lock wheel is locked tight. The gauge jaws are completely closed. Once this "one time" calibration is done, the tool is ready for use. You will never have to adjust it again unless you change the blade on your saw. Next, loosen the gray lock wheel and gauge the thickness of the stock you want created, a groove or dado. Keep in mind, if you want a slip fit, make sure the KM-1 mimics the slip fit. If you want a tight fit, make sure the KM-1 does not fall off when turned upside down. This tool will mimic EXACTLY the fit you choose.
