Garnet, although inferior to modern-day aluminum oxide grits in some respects, has definite advantages over any other abrasive grains. The softer cut of garnet will leave the smoothest finish of all abrasives. Therefore it is well suited for final sequence sanding of wood surfaces. It also achieves superior results when final sanding end grain and woods that unevenly accept stain because garnet tends to "glaze over" or burnish the wood surface. Garnet can be used for hand or machine sanding on flat surfaces under light pressure or sanding undercoats of finishing materials.
