Chip Carving Class
Friday & Saturday, June 13th - 14th: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Instructor: Rick Svitzer
Chip Carving is a type of decorative woodcarving used to decorate an existing wooden object and not to create the object itself.
Only two knives are required, and the carving is done by hand without chisels or mallets. Two ceramic sharpening stones are used to sharpen and polish the knife blades.
This class will teach the basic skills for chip carving using a practice board. You will also have an optional project board to start in class and finish at home.
Students need to bring the following:
- 0.5 mm mechanical pencil
- 12” ruler with both inches and millimeters
- A compass that can draw a 6” circle
Rick Svitzer has been chip carving off and on for 40 years. He prefers to chip-carve objects that have a practical use and are not just objects to display. He has taught chip carving at the Campbell Folk School as Wayne Barton’s assistant for 12 years. He has won first place in the Woodcarving Magazine wood carving competition in the chip carving category.
