Description
Crown, Hope 1/2" M2 Cryo Double Ended Spindle Gouge W/ Fingernail & Standard Grind
1/2″ – 350 mm long. Fits into medium (blue) grub or medium (blue) quick head.
Each double-end spindle gouge features two types of grinds: one end has a fingernail grind, while the other end has a traditional straight grind. This design makes the tool a highly versatile two-in-one option.
It has long been understood that exposing metal tools to elevated temperatures and then rapidly cooling them can alter their properties. This alteration occurs because the metal's crystal structure changes, affecting its performance in use.
The two primary crystals found in tooling steel are austenite, which is larger and softer, and martensite, which is smaller and more stable. Heat treatment aims to transform austenite into martensite, yielding steel with good wear resistance and a certain degree of ductility.
When used in conjunction with a good-quality heat treatment, the cryogenic process significantly enhances the formation of martensite from austenite. At the extremely low temperatures of -301°F (-185°C), fine eta carbides form within the carbon structure of the metal. These eta’ carbides grow very slowly and only at these low temperatures; they are exceedingly small and serve as a filler between the other crystals in the metal.
The combined effects of cryogenic processing lead to a refined crystal structure in your hand tool, ensuring it provides a lifetime of service. This refinement produces a blade that retains its edge longer and offers a superior feel during use.
