Crown, Hope 1/2" M2 Cryo Double-Ended Bowl Gouge W/ Side Grind & Bottom Grind

1/2" - 460 mm long.  Fits into a large (red) grub or a large (red) quick head.

Each double-ended bowl gouge features two distinct grinds: one end has a fingernail grind, while the other has a traditional straight grind. This design makes the tool highly versatile, offering two options in one.

It has long been understood that exposing metal tools to elevated temperatures and then rapidly cooling them can alter their properties. This process changes the metal's crystal structure, affecting its performance during use.

In tooling steel, the two main crystal types are austenite, which is larger and softer, and martensite, which is smaller and more stable. Through heat treatment, we aim to transform austenite into martensite, resulting in steel with good wear resistance and a certain level of ductility.

When combined with a high-quality heat treatment, the cryogenic process significantly enhances the transformation of austenite. At extremely low temperatures of -301°F (-185°C), fine ‘eta’ carbides form within the carbon structure. These carbides grow very slowly, only at very low temperatures, and are extremely small, acting as a ‘filler’ between the other crystals in the metal.

The combined effect of cryogenic processing results in a refined crystal structure in your hand tool, providing a lifetime of service. This process creates a blade that retains its edge longer and offers a superior feel during use.
