Description

Trans Tint, Non-Grain Raising, Universal Dye Concentrate, Purple Makes 1/2 Gallon Dye Solution

Developed by the renowned restorer and finisher Jeff Jewitt, the TransTint line of dyes offers exceptional versatility. These dyes, including the purple option, can be mixed with water to create an economical, non-flammable stain, or with alcohol for a quick-drying stain that does not raise the grain.

Furthermore, when used as a toner or "shader," these dyes can be added directly to water-based finishes and solvents to achieve a perfect match for touch-ups or to create a unique, customized finish. A 2-ounce bottle yields approximately 2 quarts of dye-stain.

TransTint dyes can also be incorporated into shellac, catalyzed lacquer, varnish, as well as water-based lacquer and polyurethane finishes. Please note that these dyes are not suitable for exterior use.

  • Alcohol and water soluble for versatile mixing and application
  • Concentrated formula — use full strength or dilute for lighter tones
  • Compatible with water-based finishes, shellac, lacquer, and most topcoats
  • Fast-drying and fade-resistant for long-lasting color
  • Mix with other dye colors to create custom shades
  • Easy cleanup with water or alcohol

One of TransTint Dyes' most unique features is its compatibility with a wide range of finishing media. Simply add the dye concentrate directly to shellac, water-based finishes, solvent lacquers, and catalyzed varnish or lacquers. Add any amount up to 1 oz. per quart. All dye colors are intermixable to produce custom shades.

Colors may vary due to computer monitor resolution. Always test the stain on a hidden area before you begin.

Adding TransTint to other products

TransTint Dyes can be mixed with various finishing products, such as waxes and glues. The list below highlights the unique applications of this product.

  • Add to waxes to make a one-step colored wax/stain for use on decorative objects and turnings
  • Add to water miscible glues, like yellow and white, to disguise glue lines
  • Add to veneer glues to makea  squeeze-out blend in on figured woods like crotch mahogany
  • Add epoxy to make clear colored fillers for filling knots and cracks
  • Mix with shellac or water-based finish for touch-ups on damaged finishes (scratches and dents)

TransTints are incompatible* when added to the following products: Oil based varnishes and polyurethanes Watco Danish Oil, Minwax Wipe on Poly, Minwax Antique Oil, and similar wipe on oil finishes (excluding gels) All oil based liquid stains (excluding oil based gel stains) Mineral Spirits Tung oil and Linseed oil 2K (2-component) polyurethane finishes * You can always apply TransTint to the wood, let dry, and then apply these products.

TransTints are not recommended for use with oil-based finishes such as stains, varnishes, polyurethanes, linseed oil, or Tung oil. You can usually work around adding TransTint to oils by using TransTint in shellac or another medium it does mix with.
