Derek From Malden

Derek From Malden

Derek Forestier, known online and on screen as "Derek From Malden," is a Massachusetts-based craftsman, DIY enthusiast, and television personality best recognized for his role on the Netflix series Making Fun. Born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, Derek hails from a blue-collar background where hands-on work has always been a core part of his life. Before gaining fame through television, he was an "average blue-collar worker" who spent his free time in his basement workshop, creating custom, handmade items such as signs, furniture, and original gifts.

His passion for woodworking and engineering led him to share his projects on social media platforms, including YouTube and Instagram, where he built a dedicated following by showcasing short videos of his builds—emphasizing creativity over step-by-step tutorials.

Derek's big break came in 2022 when he joined forces with fellow makers John Graziano (Graz Makes), Paul Jackman, Jimmy DiResta, and Pat Lap (MyMehandi) for Making Fun, a Netflix reality series that premiered on April 20, 2022. The show follows the group of friends as they collaborate to bring children's wild and imaginative ideas to life through elaborate DIY builds, often involving massive wooden structures, gadgets, and artistic installations.

Outside of Making Fun, Derek continues to pursue his craft full-time through his personal brand, "Derek From Malden." He operates a website (derekfrommalden.com) and maintains an active presence on YouTube

Her childhood spent sketching and exploring the woods inspired a lifelong passion that led her to specialize in woodcarving and pyrography. Through these mediums, she connects deeply with trees, finding peace in the rhythmic flow of carving and the earthy aroma of burning wood.

Over the years, Michele’s work has been sold through galleries and commissioned by private collectors. She is currently on a creative sabbatical, exploring new artistic directions. With over 20 years of teaching experience. Michele has taught pyrography to thousands of students across the U.S. at venues like the International Woodcarving Congress, John C. Campbell Folk School, Southeastern Woodcarving School, and the American Woodcarving School.

Michele is the author of Quick-Start Woodburning Guide and Leather Pyrography (also published in German) and parts of the Big Book of Pyrography Projects. She also contributes regularly to Pyrography and Woodcarving Illustrated magazines. A strong advocate for the pyrography community, she founded the Southeastern Pyrography Association and helped organize the first multi-material pyrography competition.

Michele continues to promote pyrography through Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop, where she teaches, demonstrates, and writes The Burning Post blog/newsletter.

David Reynolds

Devin Reynolds

I have been around construction for my whole life. I have been a career Firefighter/Paramedic for 23 years. In 2019 I started my own custom millwork and custom cabinet company in Conway SC. I have been building kitchens and bathrooms since. Currently I am working on a large church remodel Myrtle Beach.

Richard Moore

Richard Moore

Hello my name is Richard Moore. I live in High Point North Carolina and work as a contractor for Marsh Kitchens. My work has been featured in several publications and ads for Marsh Kitchens.

My interest and passion for woodworking started at an early age and I was involved in industrial arts starting in elementary school through high school. I have spent over fifty years doing the craft of woodworking at some level as a professional and as a hobby.

As a young adult I have worked as a lead carpenter for numerous crews framing houses, installing exterior and interior trim, constructing built ins and cabinetry. Durning the mid 1990’s I turned my interest toward kitchen and bath installation and design. Over the past thirty years I have worked as lead installer, kitchen and bath designer, and operations manager for Marsh Kitchens a manufacturer in High Point, North Carolina. While continuing my operations with the kitchen and bath industry, for the past fifteen years I have returned to the tools from which I started. with a renewed interest of the traditional hand tool techniques.

My personal work space has been stripped down to 98% hand tool oriented. I have had the opportunity to create several furniture pieces along with several small boxes, home decor, and shop furniture. My interest for the traditional techniques has spread to the desire to share and teach.

Over the past several years I have been facilitating workshops along with some gracious hosts and demonstrating at events with North Carolina Woodworker.net. They are a fine group and I would encourage anyone to join them even in the surrounding states.

Joe Carr

Joe Carr

Woodworker for about 40 years, specializing in wooden clocks with unique movements. Also build furniture and art pieces.

Retired electrical engineer and business executive from the high-tech industry.
For examples, see www.jncarr.com

Mike Beedy

Mike Beedy

I worked in law enforcement and corrections for nearly 15 years. In 2018, I was involved in a riot at a state prison and following that, I was diagnosed with PTSD. In 2020, my therapist recommended I find a hobby to "de-stress" to help with the effects of PTSD and I looked into woodworking.

I started with turning pens and I loved it! For about 2 years I did turning exclusively, until a friend asked if I could build her some patio chairs. That led to trying other types of woodworking, furniture making, and I eventually saw a video of someone making a very intricate clock with a scroll saw. I got a scroll saw and never looked back!

I enjoy making scroll fretwork art, with my favorite thing being making clocks. I have recently started learning to do intarsia, and now focus primarily on scroll saw art and projects. I still do some turning and furniture, but my love is scrolling! I poke holes in wood and turn trauma into sawdust!

Mike Quan

Mike Quan

I am retired after 45 years working in the IT field. I have been woodworking seriously for about 20 years and it is a great stress reliever. I have no specialty, but would like to learn how to do some period pieces in the future.

Bob Coant

Robert Coant began his woodworking hobby as a teenager inspired by his grandfather who was a master carpenter. His favorite tool has to be the scroll saw which was one of the first power tool he used. He considers himself an “amateur” with 50 years of experience.

Roger Whitaker

Roger Whitaker

I am retired after 35 years working in the telecommunications field. I have been woodworking as a hobby only for over 20 years. I enjoy building furniture for my family only because as soon as I build something for someone else it becomes a job not a fun hobby. I love the creative process working at my own pace when the creative juices start flowing.

Scott Miller

Scott Miller

I started playing with a scroll saw in the mid 90's as a stress reliever from my work IT. I am now retired living on the shores of Lake Gaston. I still love to create sawdust on my shop where I use my scroll saw and other tools to make wooden art. I do all kinds of projects, but my favorite type of projects is making intarsia.

Tonika Gillis

I have been a member of NCWW since 2017 and enjoy participating in outreach opportunities when my schedule allows

Sam Knight

Sam Knight

Sam is 56 years old and have been into some form of woodworking for the last 15 plus years. He likes many different types of woodworking. Turning has been his go-to type if he had to name one. I also enjoy carving, scrolling and pyrography. He has lots of interests but too little time and money
