It has long been recognized that subjecting metal tools to elevated temperatures and then rapidly cooling them can alter their properties. This process changes the crystal structure, affecting how the metal performs during use. The two primary crystal types in tooling steel are the larger, softer austenite and the smaller, more stable martensite. Through heat treatment, we aim to transform austenite into martensite, resulting in steel with excellent wear characteristics and a variety of ductile properties.

When combined with high-quality heat treatment, the cryogenic process significantly enhances the conversion of austenite to martensite. At extremely low temperatures of -301°F (-185°C), fine 'eta' carbides form within the carbon structure. These 'eta' carbides grow very slowly and only at these low temperatures; they are extremely small and act as fillers between the other metal crystals.

The overall effect of cryogenic treatment is a refined crystal structure in your hand tool, providing a lifetime of service. This results in a blade that retains its edge longer and offers a superior feel during use.

The tool is 300 mm long and fits medium (blue) grubs or medium (blue) quick heads. One end has a diameter of 10 mm, while the other end has a diameter of 5 mm.
