Gouge Setup Blocks quickly set four of the most common angles on your Vari-Grind-style jig when sharpening gouges with a 2" or 1 3/4" projection.

Standard Grind for Bowl Gouges: Most tool manufacturers use this grind for bowl gouges, regardless of tool diameter. It is a general-purpose grind best used on dry wood for the inside and outside of bowls, plates, and platters. It is easy to use for most skill levels.

Short Grind for Bowl Gouges: This grind finishes the bottoms of bowls with tall sides, like calabash or semi-hollow forms. It works best for bowls with narrow openings, where long or standard grinds cannot reach the bottom. Many woodturners also call it the "Bottom Feed Grind."

Long Grind for Bowl Gouges: This is the most versatile grind for bowl gouges and is often preferred for green wood, though it also works well on dry wood. It makes large cuts in green wood easy and is great for shear scraping inside and outside bowls, plates, and platters. This grind is similar to the Ellsworth and the Irish or Celtic grind.

Fingernail Grind for Spindle Gouges: A spindle gouge with a shallow flute and a fingernail grind lets you turn beads and coves with steeper sides and sharper angles in spindle work. Keep the tip rounded as you pull the wings back. This setup helps prevent the wings from catching when you roll a bead or scoop out a cove.
